We were so lucky today that Mrs Coenders brought in her Australian Blue Tongue Lizard called Gizmo!  It was sooooo exciting meeting him.
Gizmo lives in a terrarium (cage) and he is an omnivore which means he eats eggs, meat, vegetables, fruit.  He LOVES chicken!
When Gizmo sheds his skin you need to watch out for his toes and his tail.  Blue Tongue Lizards can live for as long as 20-30 years.  They need sun to heat their bodies up and because Gizmo doesn't live outside, he has a heat lamp and a special UVB lamp in his terrarium to help keep him warm.  When he's lying under his lamp he is 'basking'.  The sun helps them with digestion and processing the calcium into their bones.

Blue Tongue Lizards are found throughout most of Australia.  They like lots of ground cover to hide in (eg, rocks, logs, leaves, tussocky grasses).  Reptiles are cold blooded so they don't produce their own body heat and rely on the warmth of their surroundings to increase their body temperature.  If they are cold they will be inactive.
